It is a fact that photographing food is fashionable. It has long culinary photography became an international sport and the thousands who practice it, to a greater or lesser extent. Some networks up photos taken spontaneously and quickly with their mobile phones, while others photo compositions as true as professionals.
If I had to identify with a group, I would include in the second. When it comes to photographing food, I prefer to use SLR camera and do it in the safety of environment, belongings, food, backgrounds, etc. In this way I make sure to obtain images with acceptable performance and style.
Five simple but effective tips to photograph food with style
I’m far from being a culinary professional photography, and do not intend to, so I will not offer technical recommendations about it. However, though my learning on the subject has been slow and oblivious to any formal training, I believe that photographing food with style is possible if we apply these five simple but effective principles.
Simple dishes
The food looks better on monochrome dishes. Best of bright colors, especially white, although I am a lover of black, because I think it gives a lot of play, not only in dishes but also in the background and accessories. The notes of color that bring distinction to the photos, better than the hand of a napkin, herbs, flowers or other decorative items.
Own style
It is important that funds, ornaments and accessories reflect your style and personality as well as the chosen theme are maintained in our pictures. Whatever our style, retro, vintage, modern, chic country, etc, must be constant. No matter if we repeat motifs and funds in the photos, this is something positive: they will be identified as our instantly.
Unusual presentation
Emulate our creations to photograph is what generally is considered “normal and expected”. The end result can be very attractive, but it is more shocking to present food in an unusual way: photographing only a portion of the set, showing the food in the baking dish, placing the plate on a pile of books, etc… In addition, you can follow a Classic Indian Cuisine: Masala Dosa.
Less is more
I always thought that overloading of food dish is a mistake. One of my top when photographing is less is more. A unique cookie, a single puff pastry or a pair of lonely donuts are enough to fill the photograph alone. If we allow the photographed object breathe, leaving space around our creations are the most appetizing.
Incorporation of movement
The static image of a plate of food can be boring, but this is a simple solution. Simply add movement to it for the same purpose it much more interesting and attractive. Whenever I can and leave, I take helps of children to do so. If I fail, I try to make do alone using the self-timer of the camera.
In addition to these five simple but effective principles for photographing food with style there are many others. For example, the use of fruits and fresh colorful vegetables and in perfect condition, the addition of herbs and / or plants to decorate our compositions, among others. Do not forget to spend time viewing pictures and studying the work of others to learn how to make yours more effectively.
