Basic table settings are suitable for most dinner parties. They only require a few basic items. The dinner plate is placed at the centre of the table setting. Cutlery, including the fork and spoon is then placed around the plate. Knives and spoons should always be placed together with the spoon being on the outside. You should always place the blade of the knife towards the plate when placing it next to a plate. Place a standard water glass just above the knife blade.

You may want to switch to a luncheon-style format if you’re planning a dinner with more than one course. You should add a bowl on the top of your dinner plate. Always place a napkin beneath it. Add a side plate to the left of the plate, with a small knife placed on top. Place a cup or wine glass to the right of your water glass. If you’re serving a side salad as a starter, you should place a salad fork on the left of your dinner fork.

You can upgrade your place settings when you are going to the extreme and hosting a formal dinner. You can do this by adding a plate in between the dinner plate and bowl, a wine glass as well as a teaspoon and a salad fork.

When hosting a dinner, the most important thing is to enjoy yourself. If you’re stressed out and not having fun with your family or friends, they won’t enjoy a beautifully prepared meal at a gorgeous table.
