Mountain gorillas are a majestic but endangered species, threatened not only by habitat loss and poaching but also by the fact that they cannot survive in zoos. You can now encounter them in just three African countries, one of which is Uganda. Seeing these mighty apes in the wild is a profound and emotionally stirring experience that will live with you forever.

Before you can start planning your once-in-a-lifetime gorilla trek, there are a few essential details you need to know when it comes to getting the correct paperwork and other technicalities.

Read on to find out how to go about obtaining your permit for your exciting gorilla trekking holiday in Uganda.

Top tips

The first thing you need to know is that gorilla trekking in Uganda is available in two national parks, Mgahinga and Bwindi. Unfortunately, gorilla sightings are more irregular in Mgahinga so most permits are sold for Bwindi National Park.

The next thing to bear in mind is the cost. Most of the time, gorilla permits in Uganda are available for $600. However, it is well worth considering that during the months of May and November 2016 they will be available for a cheaper rate of $450.

Finally, due to the fact that gorillas are wild animals and are understandably shy and nervous around people, only a maximum of eight are allowed to encounter a gorilla family on any trek. This limits any distress caused to the animals.
