Tips for your first hike

Hiking is a great workout as it is low impact and has both mental and physical benefits. Here are some tips to help you get started with this worthwhile activity:

  1. Don’t overdo it

Pick your first trail as one that suits your fitness level. Try a short trail initially and then build up as you become more used to hiking. Also factor in the elevation of where you are hiking as this also adds to the time it takes and how hard your body is working.

  1. Know the weather

Check the weather forecasts for the days just before your hike and a few hours prior to arriving. This helps you to know what to pack and what clothing you will need. You might also want to adjust your plans if the forecast is dreadful, rather than be taking by surprise whilst hiking.

  1. Inform someone where you are going

Always tell someone who is not going with you where you will be hiking. This way they are able to raise the alarm if you are not back by a certain time.

  1. Remember the essentials

These should include a map and compass, extra insulation, first aid kit, waterproof matches, sunglasses and cream, a flashlight, food and extra water. For Hiking Clothing Dublin, visit a site like Basecamp.

  1. Pick the right footwear

Imagine how miserable a hike will be with sore feet! Think carefully about the shoes or boots that you wear and make sure they are worn in well before the first hike.
